
Summary: 4 December 2007, Lisbon- The 9th NGO forum on Human Rights will take place next Thursday and Friday, 6th and 7th December, in Lisbon. This event is co-organized by the EU Presidency and the Commission.
The forum is devoted to Human Rights takes place every year. Its main objective is to bring together the EU institutions and Civil-Society Organizations (CSO's) to promote mainstreaming of human right as well as to promote discussion in this field.
The Forum will bring together in Lisbon around 70 representatives of CSO's working in the field of Human Rights and Democracy, from within and outside the EU, and around 50 representatives from the Council and Member States, the Commission, the European Parliament and Europe's academic institutions.
This year, the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union chose Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) as the main theme. The roundtables will focus on Human Rights Defenders working on the field of ESC Rights, Child Poverty and identification of benchmarks and indicators for ESCR.
The Speakers of the Forum include the Secretary of State for European Affairs, Mr. Manuel Lobo Antunes, Ms. Hélène Flautre, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the sub-committee on Human Rights, Ms. Riina Kionka, Personal Representative of Javier Solana for Human Rights, Professor Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Independent Expert for the Secretary-General's Study on Violence Against Children, Mrs. Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of
Europe, as well as numerous and courageous Human Rights Defenders and members of Civil Society Organizations.
