EUHR Solana congratulates Montenegro on adoption of new Constitution

Summary: 23 October 2007, Brussels - Following the adoption of a new Constitution by two thirds majority in the Parliament, Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following statement:

"I congratulate Montenegro on the adoption of its new Constitution. Political maturity and a readiness to resolve difficult issues in a spirit of compromise have made this achievement possible. I welcome that the recommendations of the Council of Europe and its Venice Commission have largely been followed.

The adoption of the new Constitution marks an important step in consolidating Montenegro as a state, in moving forward on the internal reform agenda and in bringing Montenegro closer to the European Union. The institutions of Montenegro must now concentrate on implementing the letter and spirit of the Constitution for the benefit of all the citizens of Montenegro."
