Togo: EU Presidency Declaration on parliamentary elections

Summary: 19 October 2007, Brussels - The European Union welcomes the peaceful conduct of the parliamentary elections in Togo on 14 October 2007. These elections represent an important step towards the consolidation of democracy and constitute a major landmark in the implementation of the Global Political Agreement.

The EU also expresses its admiration for the strong democratic commitment shown by the people of Togo, who turned out in large numbers to vote. The EU would ask all parties and activists to patiently await the official results, and calls upon the authorities to finalise the process in transparent fashion.

Together with ECOWAS, the EU will seek to promote a peaceful and prosperous future for Togo.

The European Union Election Observation Mission will remain in Togo in order to follow the remainder of the electoral process including the counting of votes, the finalisation of the results and the processing of any complaints.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.


* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
