EU humanitarian response to India

Summary: July 27, 2001 : Humanitarian response to the flooding in Orissa, India (Brussels)

The European Commission has reacted speedily to the news of the devastating floods in the Indian state of Orissa. As soon as the scale of the crisis became known, the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) contacted partner NGOs working in the stricken area with a view to supporting their efforts to deliver relief to the affected population.

The Commission has now received funding requests from a number of humanitarian agencies and a formal emergency aid decision is in the pipeline. An initial sum of more than €2 million has been earmarked for a series of immediate actions covering food, temporary shelters, water/sanitation projects, other essential relief items and medical supplies.

ECHO's partners in the current relief operation are Save the Children (UK), Oxfam (UK), Concern (Ireland), DanChurchAid (Denmark), the Spanish Red Cross and Care (UK).

It is estimated that some eight million people in Orissa, which is India's second poorest state, have been affected by the disaster with many losing their homes and livelihoods. Disease outbreaks linked to the flooding have already been recorded.
