Kosovo Status: Troika to host first face-to-face talks between Belgrade and Pristina delegations, New York, 28 September 2007

Summary: 26 September 2007, Brussels - The first Troika-facilitated direct talks on the status of Kosovo between the delegations of Belgrade and Pristina will be held in the Liaison Office of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union to the UN in New York on Friday, 28 September 2007.

The meeting will take place following the Ministerial Contact Group meeting in New York on Thursday, 27 September 2007 and will provide an opportunity for both sides to present fresh ideas and to develop realistic proposals. The direct talks will be followed the same afternoon by separate meetings by the Troika with the respective delegations.

Background: In light of remaining differences in the United Nations Security Council on Kosovo and subsequent agreement in the Contact Group to drive the process forward it was decided to engage in further negotiations between Pristina and Belgrade. This effort, launched by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on 1 August 2007, is led by a Troika comprising representatives of the European Union, Russia and the United States. The representatives are Mr Wolfgang Ischinger (EU), Mr Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko (Russia) and Mr Frank Wisner (US). The Contact Group will report to the UN Secretary General by 10 December 2007.
