Myanmar: EUHR Solana urges authorities to exercise utmost restraint

Summary: 25 September 2007, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), is following very closely the situation in Myanmar.

The European Union has always been keen to see tangible progress in the political process in Myanmar, including the release of political prisoners.

Genuine peace, stability and development in Myanmar can only be achieved through political reform, the granting of fundamental rights and freedoms and full inclusion of all stakeholders.

We hope that the regime will use this opportunity to launch a process of real political reform and we call the authorities to exercise utmost restraint in handling the demonstrations.
