Summary: 13 August 2007, Brussels - Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments on the elections held in Sierra Leone on Saturday 11 August:
"I would like to congratulate the people of Sierra Leone on the success of the first elections organized by domestic institutions rather than the international community, under the leadership of the National Electoral Commission.
Presidential and legislative elections took place in an orderly manner and participation was high.
I encourage the future Government of Sierra Leone to quickly start pursuing the people's priorities and create the conditions for economic development. Together with the African Union, the United Nations, ECOWAS and other international partners, the European Union will continue to be engaged in support of a democratic, stable and prosperous future in Sierra Leone."
