EU Presidency Explanation of Vote - United Nations ECOSOC: Implementation of Declaration on Granting Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples

Summary: 26 July 2007, Geneva - EU Presidency Explanation of Vote by Mr. Miguel Silvestre, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations, on behalf of European Union, at the ECOSOC General Segment - Item 9 - Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples by the Specialized Agencies and the International Institutions Associated with the UN

On behalf of the European Union I would like to make this statement regarding the draft resolution on the "Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples by the specialized agencies and the international institutions associated with the United Nations".

The members of the European Union who are also members of the Economic and Social Council will, as in previous years, abstain during the vote on this resolution.

The European Union believes that the issues which are dealt with in the resolution are not under the competence of ECOSOC.
