Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on the announcement of the Libyan families

Summary: 17 July 2007, Brussels - Reacting to the announcement of the Benghazi families, Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner said:

"I welcome the announcement of the speaker of the families of the infected children and the Libyan authorities, which seems to indicate that a solution which satisfies the families has now been found. This is indeed good news. I consider that this is an additional step towards a positive solution for which we have been working very hard for so long. We trust that this should now permit the High Judicial Council to take a decision in favour of the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor. I hope that the High Judicial Council will convene soon and that we will see a decision allowing the medics to return to Europe in the very near future. Let me emphasize that we will stand by our commitments to continue assisting the children, their families and the Benghazi hospital in fighting the scourge of HIV/AIDS."
