EU Presidency Declaration on Togo

Summary: 11 July 2007, Brussels - The European Union, in close cooperation with the Community of West African States, continues to follow closely the democratic process in Togo.

It congratulates President Faure Gnassingbé and all political forces in Togo on the progress already made in preparing the legislative elections, and commends their efforts to hold these elections within the constitutional deadlines set.

The European Union also welcomes the progress made by the government of national unity in implementing the comprehensive political agreement and reaffirms its full support for the process of reconciliation among the people of Togo.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.


* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
