Summary: 24 June 2007, Brussels- Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), issued the following statement following the death of six soldiers belonging to the Spanish contingent in the attack against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)
"I have just spoken to the Spanish minister of defence, José Antonio Alonso, to express my total solidarity and my dismay following the death in southern Lebanon of six soldiers belonging to the Spanish contingent of UNIFIL. I have asked him to convey the European Union's and my own heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. The Spanish troops engaged in UNIFIL are doing a wonderful job under the United Nations mandate. The mission has the EU's support and cooperation and its presence is fundamental for the stability of the country."
