EU-Moldova Cooperation Council - EU Press Communiqué

Summary: 19 June 2007, Luxembourg- The Cooperation Council between the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Moldova held its ninth meeting on Tuesday, 19 June 2007. The meeting was chaired by Mr Vladimir Voronin, President of the Republic of Moldova, who also led the Moldovan delegation. The EU delegation was led by Mr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Foreign Minister of Germany. The High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Dr Javier Solana, was also present. The European Commission was represented by Ms Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the European Commission in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). The EU Special Representative for Moldova, Dr Kalman Mizsei, took part in discussions, too.

This was the second meeting of the Cooperation Council since the EU and Moldova adopted the ENP Action Plan in 2005. Progress in implementation was assessed. The EU took the opportunity to stress the need for Moldova to redouble efforts to implement democratic reforms in crucial areas such as respect for human rights, freedom of the media, and respect for the rule of law, including independence of the judiciary. The importance of a transparent business environment and fighting corruption was also underlined.

The meeting was preceded by a working breakfast, during which the Transnistrian issue was discussed. The EU expressed its continued support for finding a solution to the conflict that respects Moldova's territorial integrity and sovereignty. The EU is engaged in this mainly through the EU Special Representative for Moldova, who represents the EU in the 5+2 settlement talks. The EU hopes that the 5+2 talks will resume soon.

The Cooperation Council also commended the excellent work of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) and expressed its continued support for the Mission. The Cooperation Council welcomed the extension of EUBAM's mandate by another two years until 30 November 2009.
