Somalia: EU Commission condemns attack against interim Prime Minister Ghedi

Summary: 3 June 2007, Brussels - The European Commission condemns the attack against the Somali interim Prime Minister, Ali Mohamed Ghedi, in Mogadishu and deplores the loss of lives. At least six people were killed when a truck bomb exploded outside the residence of the interim Prime Minister Ghedi.

Olli Rehn, acting Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, said: "this new attack which comes after many others clearly shows that there is no military way-out of the current situation. Only an inclusive political settlement can put an end to the cycle of violence which has devastated the country over the last 16 years, and bring peace and stability".

The European Commission urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint and commit to a ceasefire which remains a pre-condition for an effective National Reconciliation Congress due to start in mid-June.

The Commission is in direct contact with the key actors, notably the Transitional Federal Government, the leadership of the Hawiya clan in Mogadishu and the Ethiopian authorities to facilitate such a process. The Commission and its main partners of the International Contact Group on Somalia, notably the African Union, the League of Arab States and other international partners, will meet on Tuesday to review the situation and press for an internationally backed inter-Somali peace process.

The EU also contributes to build up the capacities of the African Union Peace keeping Force AMISOM. The Commission has released €15 million from the Africa Peace Facility to support the deployment of this peace force. The Commission is also the biggest provider of development and humanitarian assistance to Somalia: A total of 25 M€ has been allocated in 2007 to respond to the vital humanitarian needs of the population.
