Summary: Mali: EU Presidency Declaration concerning presidential elections (16 May 2007: Brussels)

Following publication of the final results of the presidential elections held in Mali on 29 April 2007, which demonstrate how firmly democracy has become established there, the Presidency of the European Union wishes to pay tribute to the smooth conduct of the elections. It welcomes the calm, peaceful way in which the election campaign and polling took place and commends the maturity shown by Mali's institutions and political forces.

It congratulates President Amadou Toumani Touré on being re-elected as the country's leader and wishes him every success in the continuation of his task.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.


* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
