EUHR Solana on the occasion of the World Water Day 2007

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today made the following statement on the occasion of the World Water Day:

"Water is a common good, essential for all human activity. Competition for such an essential resource, whose scarcity will be aggravated by global warming, can be a source of conflict but water should also act as a catalyst for reconciliation and co-operation.

Water management and its link to security and conflict prevention deserve a high priority in foreign policy agendas and are one of the global challenges of our time."
