Summary: EU Presidency Declaration on the situation in the Republic of Guinea (16 February 2007: Brussels)
The European Union is dismayed that violence has continued in Guinea since the President's appointment of a Prime Minister and again bitterly regrets the loss of human lives. It condemns the violent crackdown on demonstrations and regrets the declaration of a state of siege. The restrictions on freedoms, especially on radio broadcasts, constitute a step backwards in the implementation of the undertakings given by the Government in connection with the consultations held under the Cotonou
Agreement.
The European Union, together with ECOWAS, appeals to the Government to apply faithfully the agreement signed with the trades unions. It also calls on all parties to resolve the crisis through dialogue and to renounce violence.
The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
