EU Presidency Declaration on the situation in the Republic of Guinea

Summary: EU Presidency Declaration on the situation in the Republic of Guinea (9 February 2007: Brussels)

The European Union welcomes the agreement reached on 27 January 2007 between the unions and the Government, which provides for the appointment of a Prime Minister with executive powers.

The European Union very much hopes that that appointment will be made without delay and by consensus, that it will help to bring the political crisis to an end, and that it will enable the EU to resume a constructive dialogue with the new authorities in the framework of the consultations under way since 2004 under the Cotonou agreement.

The European Union is observing the situation in Guinea closely, in close cooperation with ECOWAS. It deeply regrets the loss of human life during the demonstrations last month. It asks the Government for an unreserved explanation of the circumstances of those deaths and of the judicial steps being taken against those responsible.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
