EUHR Solana's meeting with Kosovo President Sejdiu

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met on Monday 15 January 2007, Fatmir SEJDIU, President of Kosovo.

HR Solana recognized the important role President Sejdiu has played during the last months and has praised his commitment, particularly in keeping the Unity Team together.

They discussed the EU engagement in Kosovo. In particular, HR Solana declared the following: "We are at a crucial stage of the Kosovo Status process, therefore I would like to reaffirm the EU commitment for a future enhanced EU role in Kosovo. We will continue working together with the UN Status Envoy Ahtisaari and with all the international partners to ensure that Kosovo gets a sustainable and functioning settlement that promotes regional stability.

Let me stress that our first objective now is maintaining stability and security; this will prove the real political will for an efficient cooperation with the International Community.

A smooth transition and status implementations are fundamental: I appeal the President to engage constructively in any step of the process lead by the UN Status Envoy, while the Unity Team needs to remain fully engaged and share responsibility."
