Statement by EU Commissioner Rehn on removal of Ledra Street bridge, Cyprus

Summary: Statement by EU Commissioner Rehn on removal of Ledra Street bridge, Cyprus (29 December 2006: Brussels)

Statement by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn on the removal of the bridge on Ledra Street, Cyprus

"I welcome the announcement by the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community that the pedestrian bridge on Ledra Street will be removed. I hope that this will lead to the rapid start of the necessary works to allow for the opening of a crossing-point there as soon as possible. This would be a strong signal in favour of enhanced contacts and confidence between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. It goes without saying that the Commission stands ready to provide financial support to these works. We have earmarked €100,000 in the Local Infrastructure Programme specifically for the Ledra Street checkpoint."
