EUHR Solana welcomes decision to send UN high-level mission to Darfur

Summary: EUHR Solana welcomes decision to send UN high-level mission to Darfur (13 December 2006: Brussels)

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today welcomed the UN Human Rights Council's Special Session on Darfur and the decision to send an independent high-level mission to assess the human rights situation there:

"I welcome the fact that the UN Human Rights Council has addressed the urgent situation in Darfur at a special session in Geneva.

Although the outcome of the session falls short of some of the EU's expectations, I welcome the decision to send an independent high-level mission to assess the human rights situation in Darfur.

We look to the mission to fulfil its mandate promptly and to make effective recommendations on improving the plight of the people of Darfur."
