Summary: EU Commission Vice-President Frattini's Statement on Conference "Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision", December 11-12 in Teheran (12 December 2006: Brussels)
I want to express publicly my shock and indignation in relation to the Conference on the Holocaust being held these days in Teheran and that puts the Holocaust into question.
In the face of this event, I want to state my firm condemnation of any attempt to deny, trivialize or minimise the Shoah, war crimes and crimes against humanity. I clearly reject these views which, in utter disregard of historically established facts, constitute an unacceptable affront not only to the victims of that tragedy and their descendants, but also to the whole democratic world.
As Vice-President of the Commission in charge of Fundamental Rights, I wish to restate today the Commission's firm condemnation and rejection of all manifestations of anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia.
The European Commission remains determined to make full use of the powers conferred by the Treaties to fight these repugnant phenomena. As Commissioner responsible for the criminal law aspects of the fight against racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism, I recall that the Commission issued a proposal for a Framework Decision on Combating Racism and Xenophobia. The Commission is strongly committed in having this legal instrument adopted as soon as possible, and is confident that an agreement will
be found under the forthcoming German Presidency.
Anti-Semitism has no place in Europe; nor should it in any other part of the world. Dialogue and understanding should overcome hatred and provocation.
