European Commissioner for External relations and the European Neighbourhood policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner welcomes political developments in the Kyrgyz Republic

Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner welcomed the signature today by President Bakiev of the new Constitution passed yesterday by the Kyrgyz Parliament:

"I am pleased with these developments in the Kyrgyz Republic. It is important for the sake of democracy, stability and prosperity in this partner country that the authorities and the opposition keep the dialogue open and strive to find a common position. The Constitutional reform was overdue."

She added: "I am glad, that the protest rallies finished peacefully without major incidents. We now look forward to see political and economic reforms being implemented, notably as regards election legislation and the legislation concerning political parties. We are ready to continue our assistance during the implementation of the reform process."
