Summary: EUHR Solana welcomes decision by Georgian authorities to release four Russian officers (2 October 2006: Brussels)

Following the release of four Russian officers from custody in Georgia today with a view to their transfer to the Russian Federation, Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following statement:

"I welcome the decision by the Georgian authorities to release the four Russian officers through the OSCE and allow their transfer to Russia. I hope this can contribute to the re-establishment of normal relations between Russia and Georgia.

The European Union stands ready to facilitate contacts between the sides and to support further confidence-building measures."
