A conference on "The European Social Model and the Challenges Facing Bulgaria", organised by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the Economic and Social Council of Bulgaria, will be held in Sofia on 2 October 2006. Members of the EESC, the ESC of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian government will try to identify the challenges faced by Bulgaria on the eve of its accession to the EU in relation with the European Social Model.

The conference will be opened by Mr. Henri Malosse, President of the EESC's section on Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship (SOC) and Mr. Lalko Dulevski, President of the Economic and Social Council of Bulgaria together with the Bulgarian Ministers Mr. Ivaylo Kalfin (Vice Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs) and Mrs. Emilia Maslarova (Minister of Labour and Social Policy). Members of the EESC and the ESC of Bulgaria will deliver key note reports on the following topics:

Each session will be followed by a debate with participation of representatives of the Bulgarian government. The conference will provide a final document with recommendations to the government, helping to face the challenges of the implementation of the European Social Model in Bulgaria after EU accession. The conference is being held a couple of days after the Commission's final recommendation about the exact date of accession of Bulgaria and Romania.
