Somalia: EU Commission condemns attack against President and Parliament

European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, condemns the attack against President Abdullahi Yusuf and the Transitional Federal Parliament on 18 September in Baidoa. This attack was not only an aggression against the Somali Transitional Institutions but it was aimed to disrupt the Somali peace process as a whole.

The European Commission reiterates its full support to the current negotiation and reconciliation process in Somalia and encourages all the actors to pursue it with determination and courage.

The European Commission also condemns the horrific murder on 17 September in Mogadishu of an Italian humanitarian worker, Sister Leonella. It calls on all Somali leaders to guarantee the safety and security of humanitarian aid workers, whose only aim is to relieve the Somali people from their suffering.

The European Commission addresses its condolences and its sympathy to the families of the victims of these appalling attacks.
