EUHR Solana meets with Jessen-Petersen, UNSG Special Representative for Kosovo and Head of UNMIK (Brussels: 13 June 2006)

Summary: EUHR Solana meets with Jessen-Petersen, UNSG Special Representative for Kosovo and Head of UNMIK (Brussels: 13 June 2006)

Summary of remarks to journalists by Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, after his meeting with Søren JESSEN-PETERSEN, UNSG Special Representative for Kosovo and Head of UNMIK

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met Søren JESSEN-PETERSEN, UN Secretary General Special Representative for Kosovo and Head of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), today, shortly before the end of Mr JESSEN-PETERSEN's mandate. The following is a summary of Mr SOLANA'S remarks to journalists after the meeting:

"First of all I would like to congratulate Søren JESSEN-PETERSEN on his tremendous commitment to the UN Mission in Kosovo over the past two years. Søren JESSEN-PETERSEN knows the region very well. As you all know, before becoming SRSG in Kosovo he was EU Special Representative in FYROM. His extraordinary personal dedication and energy have helped Kosovo to move forward.

Cooperation between Søren JESSEN-PETERSEN and the different EU actors has always been excellent. This cooperation is essential as the EU is committed to enhancing its future role in Kosovo and to supporting Kosovo's efforts to build a stable and multi-ethnic society.

Mr JESSEN-PETERSEN has always stressed the crucial importance of standards implementation. We urge the government to accelerate efforts to produce concrete results in standards implementation. We also call upon the Kosovo Serbs to join the Kosovo institutions. And we express our full support to Martti AHTISAARI in achieving a status settlement.

Last but not least I would like to wish Søren JESSEN-PETERSEN all the best, as he is returning to his wife and children. I know that he will continue to closely follow the developments in Kosovo and that he will always be there to support peace and stability in the region."
