EUHR Solana welcomes progress by Bosnia and Herzegovina in reforming constitution

Summary: EUHR Solana welcomes progress by Bosnia and Herzegovina in reforming constitution (Brussels: 17 April 2006)

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today issued the following statement on constitutional reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina:

"I welcome the progress made in Bosnia and Herzegovina towards reforming the constitution. After many months of negotiations, a package of measures with broad party support has been sent to the Parliament. These amendments offer an important first step towards ensuring that the country's central institutions function more effectively in order to meet European standards.

This week, Bosnian Parliamentarians have the chance to send a positive signal to Europe that the country is ready and able to reform itself.

This is only the first step in a longer process. Discussions on constitutional reform will continue after the October elections."
