European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs to discuss with G8 energy leaders the key global energy security issues

Summary: European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs to discuss with G8 energy leaders the key global energy security issues (Brussels, 14 March 2006)

European Energy Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, will participate in the G8 Energy Ministerial Meeting that will take place in Moscow on 16 March. The day before, Commissioner Piebalgs will meet the Russian Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko.

The Energy ministerial meeting puts together the Energy Ministers of the G8 (United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada, USA, France, Japan and Russia), Commissioner for Energy and the EU Presidency. Following the Russian initiative, the meeting will be enlarged to leading developing countries (India, China, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa) together with the heads of some international bodies such as the International Energy Agency (IEA), the World Bank, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the International Energy Forum (IEF) and the International Atomic energy Agency (IAEA). Discussions during the Energy Ministers meeting will pave the way towards a Statement on Energy Security that is expected to be adopted during the G8 Saint Petersburg Summit in July. Energy security has been identified as one of three priorities for the Russian G8 Presidency.

EU-Russia energy relations are high in the European energy Agenda. The Russian Federation is Europe's most important supplier of gas and oil, and the European Union is Russia's largest energy buyer. The Green Paper "A European Strategy for Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy" considers that the Russian Federation and the European Union must pursue a common strategy in relation to the energy security of our continent.
