EU Commissioner Rehn on election of Kosovo President Sejdiu

I congratulate Fatmir Sedjiu on his election today as President of Kosovo. I would like to take this opportunity to assure him of the continuing support of the EU particularly at this time when the talks to determine the future status of the province are ongoing.

Kosovo, as the rest of the Western Balkans, has a clear European perspective. The negotiations on its future status are clearly the most challenging political issue for the region. We are supporting the status process and we are committed to a lasting solution to create a truly democratic and multiethnic Kosovo.

I hope that Kosovo will continue to follow the legacy of President Rugova and respect the principles that he always followed, of seeking a peaceful resolution to the difficult issues facing Kosovo.
