Summary: Yemen: EU Commission provides €2.5m humanitarian aid (12 January 2006: Brussels)
FR - DE
The European Commission has allocated €2.5 million to address basic needs for safe water and healthcare in rural Yemen. The aid will bring relief to some of the most vulnerable in the population, with an emphasis on children and women. The funding will be channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department which comes under the responsibility of Louis Michel, Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid.
In Yemen, the effects of chronic drought and lack of access to health care on the most vulnerable are increasingly severe: waterborne diseases are one of the main causes of mortality among children and maternal deaths account for 42% of deaths among women of child bearing age. Louis Michel declared: "Humanitarian needs in Yemen are too often forgotten by the donors' community. The Commission remains committed to improving access to safe water and health care for the most vulnerable groups
throughout 2006".
Humanitarian assistance is still required in Yemen to meet basic needs, particularly of people living in remote rural areas. The Commission, through its humanitarian partners, will fund drinking water supplies for some 30,000 beneficiaries and healthcare provision for around 70,000 people. All interventions are designed with sustainability in mind.
The European Commission is a major aid donor to Yemen. Over the last five years, it has provided €90 million, including €12.2 million in humanitarian assistance and €34 million for food security.
