EUHR Solana welcomes final military troop relocation in Aceh

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, welcomed today the successful completion of military troop withdrawals in Aceh, in accordance with the peace agreement, signed in Helsinki by the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) on 15 August 2005:

"The final relocation of non-organic military forces out of Aceh before the end of the year is an important step in the peace process and marks the Government of Indonesia's full compliance with the Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding.

I am very satisfied with the strong political commitment of both parties to bring the process forward and I believe that we are now on an irreversible path towards sustainable peace in Aceh."
