EUHR Solana welcomes completion of GAM weapons decommissioning in Aceh

Summary: EUHR Solana welcomes completion of GAM weapons decommissioning in Aceh (19 December 2005: Brussels)

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, today welcomed the successful completion of the fourth and final phase of weapons decommissioning by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), in accordance with the Helsinki peace agreement:

"I am delighted that the fourth and last stage of the weapons decommissioning process, monitored by the EU-led Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM), has now been completed in Aceh in accordance with the Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in August this year.

Following today's surrender by the GAM of the last of the 840 weapons referred to in the MOU, the final withdrawals of troops and police by the Government of Indonesia can go ahead in the coming days.

These developments demonstrate the political will of both sides and are an important step in the reconciliation process. They will lead to greater stability and security for the people of Aceh.

I congratulate both sides for their leadership, courage and commitment, which set the right tone for the continued process."
