EUHR Solana to visit Palestinian Terrorities

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), will visit the Palestinian Territories on Sunday 18 December 2005. The visit underscores the EU's firm political engagement in the region.

In the Gaza Strip, Mr. Solana will visit the Rafah Border Crossing, where the EU has established, at the request of the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), a civilian border assistance mission (EU BAM Rafah) in the framework of the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP). He will also visit the police headquarters of Gaza, in view of the launching on 1st January of another ESDP mission -- EUPOL COPPS -- which will support the PA in establishing sustainable and effective policing arrangements.

During his visit, Mr. Solana also hold talks with PA President Mahmoud ABBAS and meet with other senior Palestinian officials.
