Avian Influenza: Live bird import ban prolonged

Summary: Avian Influenza: Live bird import ban prolonged (16 November 2005: Brussels)

European Union Member States today endorsed a Commission Decision to extend the ban on EU imports of live captive birds other than poultry (see IP/05/1351), at the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH).

It was agreed that, due to the ongoing problem of avian influenza in various regions worldwide, the import ban would remain in place until 31 January 2006, subject to further review. Restrictions on the movement of birds accompanying their owners were also prolonged until the end of January. The prolongation of certain EU-wide bio-security measures against avian influenza, which are due to expire on 1 December, will be discussed at the next SCFCAH meeting on 22-23 November.
