Joint Statement on Iraq constitutional referendum

JOINT STATEMENT of the EU High Representative for the CFSP and the EU Presidency Javier SOLANA and Jack STRAW welcome the Iraq constitutional referendum

Following their meeting on 17 October, Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), and Jack Straw, UK Foreign Secretary, as EU Presidency, welcomed the Iraq Referendum:

"This is another historic step for the Iraqi people. There appears to have been an encouraging turnout across Iraq in Saturday's referendum on a draft Constitution. It is a great tribute to the developing strength of popular democracy in Iraq that this poll took place smoothly and remarkably peacefully."
