Summary: EUHR Solana met with fYROM Deputy Prime Ministers Shekerinska and Xhaferi (27 September 2005: Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met Radmila SHEKERINSKA and Musa XHAFERI, Deputy Prime Ministers of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP, had a meeting today with Radmila Shekerinska and Musa Xhaferi, Deputy Prime Ministers of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The focus of the meeting was on the political situation in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and on the country's progress in the process of integration with the EU.

Ms Sherkerinska and Mr Xhaferi reported to Mr Solana on the ongoing reform efforts, including judicial, economic and electoral reforms. They referred to their country's application for EU membership and stressed the crucial importance of the EU's response - through the Opinion from the European Commission and the decisions by the European Council - to this application.

Mr Solana welcomed the progress made on reforms and underlined the importance of effective implementation. He said he expected the Commission to present its opinion on the membership application on 9 November and the European Council to respond in December.

The High Representative stressed that there was no alternative for the Government to the European reform agenda and no alternative for the country to pursuing a future in the European Union.
