EUHR Solana's meeting with South African FM Dlamini-Zuma

Summary: EUHR Solana's meeting with South African FM Dlamini-Zuma (21 September 2005: New York)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met with Foreign Minister Nkosazana DLAMINI-ZUMA of South Africa

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met yesterday with Nkosazana DLAMINI-ZUMA, Foreign Minister of South Africa, in New York.

Mr SOLANA and Mrs ZUMA held a very friendly and fruitful meeting. They reviewed carefully and shared a common assessment on the main items of the African agenda.

On the situation in the Great Lakes region, and in particular in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, they agreed that the overriding priority should be given to disarmament of militias.

Though reconstruction efforts are making progress, better coordination would be required. In the short term, efforts have to concentrate on the holding of the scheduled June elections.

On Sudan-Darfur and on Somalia they underscored the great challenges the international community is facing and decided to continue firmly the common efforts with a view to implement the agreed commitments. On Liberia they highlighted the importance of the next October's elections and drew the attention to the need to reintegrate the disarmed and demobilised militias.
