EUHR Solana welcomes Afghan elections

Summary: EUHR Solana welcomes Afghan elections (19 September 2005: Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, welcomes the elections in Afghanistan

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today congratulated the government and people of Afghanistan following the successful conduct of yesterday's parliamentary and local elections.

"I should like to congratulate the Afghan people and government on the successful organisation of the first democratic parliamentary and provincial elections in more than thirty years. The peaceful conduct of the polls was a victory for all those who are working for the future of their nation.

Yesterday's elections heralded the beginning of a new, democratic era for Afghanistan and were a historic milestone on the road to recovery and reconstruction.

The European Union will continue to give its full support to the government and people of Afghanistan in their efforts to strengthen the democratic order and build a stable and prosperous Afghanistan."
