EU Presidency Declaration on Guinea-Bissau

Summary: EU Presidency Declaration on Guinea-Bissau (19 September 2005: Brussels)

Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on Guinea-Bissau

The European Union notes that the swearing-in ceremony of the elected President, General Joao Bernardo Nino Vieira, is due to take place on 1 October. The European Union hopes that this ceremony will take place as scheduled in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The European Union reiterates the importance of political and institutional stability in Guinea Bissau as a pre-condition for the continuing support and assistance by the international community and the development of the country's relationship with the international financial institutions. The guarantee of continuity in financial and economic policies will be essential in the perspective of Emergency Post-Conflict Assistance (EPCA) and for the realisation of a successful Round Table of Donors scheduled for November.

In this context, it is important for the stability of Guinea Bissau that all concerned in the political process in the country clearly respect the democratic mandates of the elected authorities and commit themselves to institutional collaboration.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
