Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met with President SUSILO Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia
Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with SUSILO Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia, in the margins of the United Nations World Summit. The meeting took place on the eve of the entry into force of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) which aims to achieve a lasting peace in the Indonesian province of Aceh.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the two leaders to review their bilateral cooperation.
President SUSILO thanked Mr. Solana for the EU's support in response to the devastating tsunami that struck the country last December and for its deployment, in cooperation with five ASEAN countries, of 130 observers to monitor the implementation of the aforesaid Memorandum of Understanding. Mr. Solana re-emphasised the EU's commitment towards the success of this process, and to continue to do whatever possible to help maintain stability and build long-term peace between the parties.
The two leaders also discussed the ongoing process of regional integration under the auspices of ASEAN. President SUSILO stressed the importance of building economic ties with other regional groupings, in particular the European Union, and of co-operating more closely on issues related to global security.
