EUHR Solana met with Central African Ministers

Summary: EUHR Solana met with Central African Ministers (12 September 2005: Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met with a delegation of Central African Ministers

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with Rodolphe ADADA, Raymond RAMAZANI and Jean-François NDONGOU, respectively Foreign Ministers of the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo DRC) and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Gabonese Republic, as well as with the Head of the Republic of Angola's Mission to the EU, Ambassador Toko Diakenga SERÃO.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss democratic transition in Congo DRC, with a particular focus on elections, integration of the army and good governance. Stability in Congo DRC is of vital importance for the rest of the African continent which is why the international community has been so deeply engaged in this region. In parallel, the involvement of African partners needs to be intensified.

The EU High Representative expressed the EU's firm support to Congo DRC's transition, most notably through EUSEC and EUPOL, two ESDP missions targeting reforms in the security and police sectors respectively. He outlined the challenges ahead, notably in respecting the electoral timeframe and in passing the electoral law without delay. HR Solana commended the efforts of different members of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) to play a constructive role in the stabilisation of Congo DRC and augured every success for the forthcoming ECCAS summit in Nairobi, Kenya, on 17-18 January 2006.
