EUHR Solana on final results of Iranian Presidential Elections

Summary: June 27, 2005: Comments by EU HR Javier SOLANA on the final results of the Iranian presidential elections (Brussels)

Javier Solana, the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments to the media on the outcome of the presidential elections in Iran:

"In our last meeting in Geneva on 25 May with Hassan Rohani, National Security Council Chief of Iran, the EU offered the possibility of presenting to the Iranian leaders around the end of July a comprehensive proposal for them to analyse.

We have no reason to change our commitment at this point in time and will continue working in this direction.

I repeat the importance the European Union attaches to political and economic reforms in Iran as well as progress on issues of concern: human rights, non-proliferation, counter-terrorism and the Middle East. Such progress is necessary for EU-Iran relations - including the negotiations for a trade and co-operation agreement - to reach their full potential.

For its part, the EU expects to continue talks with the new president under the terms of the Paris Agreement. Nothing outside these terms will be accepted.

We need to wait and see how the new leadership will react to these ideas which they know very well are those of the EU."
