Declaration of Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on postponement of Libyan Supreme Court ruling

Summary: May 31, 2005: Declaration of Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on the postponement of the Libyan Supreme Court's ruling today (Brussels)

Benita Ferrero-Waldner who last week visited Tripoli and raised the case at the highest level with Colonel Khadhafi gave the following response :"I welcome this decision. It indicates that the Libyan Supreme Court accepts that the original trial needs additional consideration, and that the death sentence against the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian medic, cannot be confirmed. Last week in Tripoli, I explained to Colonel Khadhafi the strong desire of the EU that this case should be reviewed with all possible speed, and fully considering all its elements. I visited the defendants in jail myself, and it is clear to me that they are under great psychological pressure, and cannot go on very much longer. After more than six years in jail, it is imperative that a just solution be found in as a matter of urgency. The European Union has repeatedly drawn attention to deficiencies in the conduct of the trial and to scientific and medical evidence pointing to the innocence of the accused. The European Union will continue to follow developments in this case very closely, including all trials against officers accused of mistreating defendants".
