Declaration by Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner on the events in Ecuador

Declaration of the European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, on the events in Ecuador:

"I have followed with growing concern the recent tragic events in Ecuador which led to the removal from office of former President Lucio Gutiérrez. I take this opportunity to express my sympathy to the families of those persons who were killed or injured during recent days and to express hope that there will be no further bloodshed.

I remain extremely worried about the profound political instability which has once again rocked the country. It is vital that all sides demonstrate respect for Ecuador´s democratic insitutions and for the rule of law. The Commission calls upon all Ecuadoreans to work together to strengthen the country´s democratic framework and secure a return to constitutional normality at the earliest opportunity through a process of dialogue and national reconciliation."


Declaración de la Comisaria Europea de Relaciones Exteriores y Política Europea de Vecindad, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, sobre los acontecimientos acaecidos en Ecuador:

"He seguido con creciente preocupación los trágicos hechos acaecidos recientemente en Ecuador que han conducido a la destitución del Presidente Lucio Gutiérrez. Aprovecho esta oportunidad para expresar mi simpatía a los familiares de las personas que han perdido la vida o han sido heridos durante los últimos días y para expresar mi esperanza de que no haya más baños de sangre.

Estoy extremadamente preocupada por la profunda inestabilidad política que una vez más ha azotado el país. Es vital que todos las partes involucradas demuestren respeto por las instituciones democráticas de Ecuador y por el Estado de Derecho. La Comisión pide a todos los ecuatorianos que trabajen juntos para reforzar el marco democrático del país y asegurar la vuelta a la normalidad constitucional tan pronto como sea posible, a través de un proceso de diálogo y de reconciliación nacional."
