Description of Delegation's work in Nairobi
Head of Delegation, Ambassador Eric van der Linden
Role in UN Organisations
The Delegation in Kenya, in addition to bilateral relations with Kenya and Somalia, is responsible for EC relations with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (HABITAT). The Head of Delegation is accredited to both organisations as the EC Permanent Representative with observer status.
The Delegation seeks to provide support to the relevant departments in DG Environment and DG Development in engaging in policy dialogue across the range of priority areas covered by UNEP:
- Environmental information, assessment and research, including environmental emergency response capacity and strengthening of early warning and assessment functions,
- Enhanced coordination of environmental conventions and development and development of policy instruments;
- Fresh water
- Technology transfer and industry
- Support to Africa
The Delegation also endeavours to provide an important link with Brussels-based department on the HABITAT agenda - it closely follows Habitat's key programmes and initiatives such as the Global Campaign on Urban Governance.
At the same time, it aims to draw synergies where possible with its country-based work on environment, conservation and decentralised cooperation in Kenya and Somalia.
