Summary: April 7, 2005: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, congratulates the new leadership in Iraq (Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made today the following remarks on the election and nomination of the new leadership in Iraq:

"I congratulate the Iraqi Transitional National Assembly on having overcome difficulties and elected a President of the Assembly, its two Vice-presidents and the members of the Presidency Council. These important steps in the transitional process have made it possible to nominate the Prime Minister in accordance with the Transitional National Law.

My congratulation go to Mr. Hajin Al-Hassani, President of the National Assembly and the two Vicepresidents, Mr. Hussein Al-Shahristani and Mr. Aref Taifour. I also congratulate Mr. Jalal Talabani upon his election as President and Sheikh Ghazi Al Yawer and Mr. Adel Abdul Mahdi upon their election as Vice-presidents. I would also like to convey my congratulations to Mr Ibrahim Jaafari upon his nomination as Prime Minister and express the hope that Iraq will soon see the constitution of the whole government.

The leadership of Iraq which is emerging has a broad base with participation from all major groupings. I would like to express our strong support for the new leadership and our best wishes for Iraq and the Iraqi people. I look forward to working with the new leadership of Iraq
