EU humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and Pakistan

Summary: April 19, 2001 : The Commission grants €2.6 million in humanitarian aid for refugees and displaced persons in Afghanistan and Pakistan (Brussels)

The European Commission has granted €2.585 million for the continuation of humanitarian operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Managed by the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), the funds will be used to help refugees and displaced persons affected by drought and fighting, which have forced almost 500 000 people to leave their homes since the summer. Over the past two months the worsening situation in Afghanistan has driven many people into Pakistan.

Pakistan: The funding will be used by the UNHCR, the International Rescue Committee and Danish Refugee Council to continue hygiene, water and sanitation operations at two camps housing almost 100 000 refugees.

Afghanistan: (Hazarajat and Herat ) Most of the funding will be used to cover transport and logistics by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and to continue the assistance and medical and nutritional services provided to displaced persons by other ECHO partners. There will be an estimated 330 000 beneficiaries.

ECHO has financed a number of humanitarian operations in the region since 1999. This grant brings the aid total to €23 350 000.
