EUHR Solana met with the High Representative-EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summary: February 3, 2005: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met today with Paddy Ashdown, High Representative/EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina (Brussels)

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with Paddy Ashdown, High Representative/EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss recent developments in BiH. They both made very positive remarks about the recently launched EU operation ALTHEA in BiH and noted that the mission is well on track.

The EU High Representative commended the recent work of the Police Restructuring Commission, whose task was to design a single state level structure for BiH's police as well as the European Union Police Mission (EUPM). He noted that progress on police restructuring is a requirement for moving towards a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU. Police restructuring is necessary in order to provide BiH with a modern and effective police force that is both financially sustainable and better equipped to fight against crime.

The two also discussed progress made by the BiH authorities regarding ICTY co-operation. The EU High Representative reminded the BiH authorities that inadequate cooperation with the Tribunal is now the major obstacle standing in the way of BiH's progress towards the European Union.

The EU High Representative expressed hope that the recent transferral of Savo Todovic to The Hague will mark the beginning of a process that will lead towards the transfer of other indictees without delay.
