Summary: January 31, 2005: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, congratulates Iraqi people for yesterday's elections (Brussels)
Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made this morning the following comments to the media on the aftermath of the Iraqi elections (30 January):
"I would like to congratulate the Iraqi people for the high-level participation in these elections. They voted under difficult circumstances, but their energy and determination are a sign that the majority of the people of Iraq are willing to move their country towards stability and democracy.
Security will remain an important priority for the Iraqi authorities in the months to come. Writing the new Constitution is, undoubtedly, a top priority and I hope that all communities will fully participate in this process. It should result in a balanced text, reflecting the different cultural and political positions in Iraq.
The European Union is ready and willing to help the Iraqi authorities, both economically and politically. We have been working on the possibility of helping to train the Iraqi police forces, the administration and the judiciary. These are all very important elements for the country's future and where we have accumulated significant experience through a long period of time with similar missions in different countries."
