Summary: January 25, 2005: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met Sudanese Vice-President Ali Osman AL-TAHA (Brussels)
Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with Ali Osman AL-TAHA, Vice-President of Sudan, on the occasion of the signing in Brussels of the Country Strategy Paper with the European Commission.
The High Representative commended Vice-President Taha for his decisive role in the peace negotiations with the Sudan's People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) and expressed his satisfaction about the conclusion of the comprehensive peace agreement, which was signed on 9 January 2005 in Nairobi. Javier Solana underlined the importance of a swift and complete implementation of this agreement, which should also have a positive influence on the conflict in Darfur. He stressed that the principles
on which the "Naivasha agreement" is based, namely power sharing, an equitable distribution of the wealth generated by the country's resources, and progressive democratisation, should be applied in the whole of Sudan.
The High Representative also underscored the EU's commitment to support the implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement. However, he also pointed out that the full resumption of co-operation must go hand in hand with the effective implementation of the peace agreement and tangible progress towards a solution to other conflicts in Sudan, in particular in Darfur. In this respect, he appealed to the Government of Sudan (GoS) to strictly abide by its commitments of the "N'djamena cease-fire
agreement" and the security and humanitarian protocols signed at Abuja.
Taking note of Mr Taha's appointment as chief negotiator of the GoS for the "Abuja talks", the High Representative expressed hope that the negotiations with the Darfur rebels will make substantial progress at the next round, scheduled for February.
